JAKARTA – The national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has successfully completed a series of tests of using palm-oil-blended bioavtur (J2.4) in commercial aircraft. The bioavtur used in the tests is classified as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The tests were conducted under a cooperation between the state-owned airline Garuda Indonesia with state-owned oil-gas company Pertamina, the ministry of energy and mineral resources (MEMR), transportation ministry, and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).
Garuda Indonesia President Director Irfan Setiaputra said that the bioavtur J2.4 tests were completed with a flight test using Garuda Indonesia’s airplane of the type of B737-800NG PK-GFX with aircraft machine of CFM56-7B.
The airplane flew from Soekarno Hatta international airport in western part of Jakarta to Pelabuhan Ratu Airspace in West Java on Wednesday, 04 October 2023. At the same day, a test of bioavtur J2.4 was also conducted through a series of engine ground run tests by using the same airplane at the Garuda Maintenance Facility (GMF) AeroAsia.
“The tests completed the static tests that had been implemented by the end of July by using the aircraft machine of CFM56-7B. Based on the results of all of the tests, the research team of PT LAPI ITB and other stakeholders reported that the use of Bioavtur J2.4 as SAF on aircraft type of Boeing 737-800 is safe and under control,” Irfan said in a written statement on Tuesday, 10 October 2023.
“With the positive result, Garuda Indonesia and Pertamina are ready to continue the bioavtur synergy to the next level, which is the use of bioavtur as SAF for commercial airplanes of Garuda Indonesia,” he said.
He said that the bioavtur J2.4 is part of Garuda Indonesia Group’s commitment to support various initiatives of decarbonization. “The use of bioavtur J2.4 in commercial airplanes will be historic as it is the first of its kind in the world.
“Looking forward, Garuda Indonesia is ready to use the SAF for commercial flights. We’ll certainly adjust it with the results of our comprehensive assessment of the SAF use in our commercial flights,” said Irfan. (*)
