JAKARTA – A total of 611 member companies of the Indonesian Palm Oil Association (GAPKI), or 90 percent of its total 731 member companies, have obtained their certificates of Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO).
GAPKI is committed to pushing the other 10% member companies to obtain the ISPO certificates as soon as possible. “For GAPKI, sustainability means ISPO. We shouldn’t talk about sustainability if we haven’t yet got the ISPO certification. This is GAPKI’s commitment,” GAPKI Secretary General Hadi Sugeng told the press conference of IPOC 2023 in Jakarta on Tuesday, 03 October 2023.
According to him, GAPKI has been committed to ensuring that 100% of its member companies should obtain the ISPO certificates. “The ISPO certification is mandatory for palm oil companies in Indonesia,” he said.
Hadi Sugeng said that so far the government has issued a total of 1,005 ISPO certificates. There are about 3,000 palm oil companies operating in Indonesia. “So, overall only around 30% of the palm oil companies in Indonesia have obtained the ISPO certificates,” he said.
Hadi Sugeng said that GAPKI supports the current efforts of government to improve the ISPO certification. “We’ll keep taking part in improving the sustainability certification in parts that still need further improvement,” he said.
He said that ISPO is very important for GAPKI in ensuring the sustainability of Indonesian palm oil. It is because the ISPO certification is the sum of compliances with all prevailing regulations in Indonesia.
“We realize that until now ISPO certification is not yet globally accepted. But this is our challenge. We need to continually support ISPO and we’re committed to obtaining the ISPO certificates. In addition to that, together with the government we’ll keep intensifying positive campaigns at home and abroad. At global market, our positive campaigns will be also aimed to get global acceptability of ISPO certificates as reliable and trustworthy certificates of sustainability,” said Hadi Sugeng. (*)
